Duties of the Tax Assessor-Collector
The Tax Assessor-Collector is elected countywide by the voters for a four year term and has specific duties outlined in the Texas Constitution and by statutes passed through Legislative action. The statutory responsibilities of the Tax Assessor-Collector include the assessment of property and collection of ad valorem taxes for the county, as well as contracting with other entities to collect their jurisdictions' taxes. In Walker County, these duties are contracted to the Walker County Appraisal District.
The
office is also responsible for registration and titling of all vehicles
in the county, collection of the state sales tax on all automobiles sold, issuance
of disabled parking permits, along with the issuance of beer and liquor
permits. *In 2008, our office registered 48,286 vehicles in Walker
County, along with processing over 11,000 title transactions.
The
Walker County Tax Assessor-Collector is also the Voter Registrar and the
County Election Officer maintaining the records of approximately 30,000
registered voters. The office also keeps the voter rolls up to date
and provides voter information to every voting precinct. We hold all federal, state and county elections and contract with the cities of Huntsville, Riverside, and New Waverly along with the school districts and the hospital district for their elections. We also work with the political parties during the Primary Elections and assist as requested.
