Duties of the Tax Assessor-Collector

The Tax Assessor-Collector is elected countywide by the voters for a four year term and has specific duties outlined in the Texas Constitution and by statutes passed through Legislative action.  The statutory responsibilities of the Tax Assessor-Collector include the assessment of property and collection of ad valorem taxes for the county, as well as contracting with other entities to collect their jurisdictions' taxes.  In Walker County, these duties are contracted to the Walker County Appraisal District

The office is also responsible for registration and titling of all vehicles in the county, collection of the state sales tax on all automobiles sold, issuance of disabled parking permits, along with the issuance of beer and liquor permits.  *In 2008, our office registered 48,286 vehicles in Walker County, along with processing over 11,000 title transactions.

The Walker County Tax Assessor-Collector is also the Voter Registrar and the County Election Officer maintaining the records of approximately 30,000 registered voters.  The office also keeps the voter rolls up to date and provides voter information to every voting precinct. We hold all federal, state and county elections and contract with the cities of Huntsville, Riverside, and New Waverly along with the school districts and the hospital district for their elections.  We also work with the political parties during the Primary Elections and assist as requested.
