About Us

The Walker County Historical Commission (WCHC) is a constituted organization of Walker County. The WCHC was organized in 1963 for the purpose of preservation of the county's history and cultural artifacts. The WCHC is composed of citizen members appointed by the County Judge. The Commission reports to the County Judge and county Commissioner's court.

The organization works in various fields, including archeology, architecture, history, economic development and heritage tourism for the benefit of present and future generations. The agency helps identify and preserve historic sites and helps to preserve the heritage of Walker County. Historic preservation is a vital part of a promising future within our community.

The WCHC has earned numerous awards during the 41 year existence, including the distinguished Service Award given by the Texas Historical Commission, the state agency for historic preservation. Commission members have initiated the research, writing documentation, and preparation of over 89 historical markers in the county. In 1986 after extensive research the WCHC published Walker County, a History. In 1992 in cooperation with the Huntsville Item, Commission members helped compile, research and publish Images of the Past, A Pictorial History of Walker County - Home of Sam Houston..

Through fundraising projects and donations the WCHC operates and maintains the Gibbs-Powell House/Museum in Huntsville for the safe display and storage of the county's history and many artifacts that are still in existence. At present the Gibbs-Powell House is undergoing restoration. The parlor, the master bedroom and a bathroom have been restored, with plans for other rooms to follow.

You are welcome to attend our meetings which are held on the third Sunday each month at 3 p.m. at the Gibbs-Powell House/Museum.
